The information Rresented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:

Startup Delay Because of f'ain Electrical Generator Damage On May 17,1979, while perfonning a final inspection on the main electrical generator, a Westinghouse representative detected two hurned spots on the generator stator coil.

The licensee, through discussions with Westinghouse technical personnel, determined that the generator cannot be run without danger of further damage.

The licensee has decided to disassemble and repair the generator.

The total length of time estimated for repair is from 17 to 24 days.

Media interest is expected.

The licensee issued a news release on fiay 17.

A news release is not plannned by the NRC.

Region V (San Francisco) received telephone notification from the fianager, Nuclear Generation, on this item at 7:30 AM on May 18, 1979.
