PROBLEH CONTACT TITLE (HA4 30 CHARACTERS) tU MU Seal Re';u' n Bac'<. Pres sure W.

DESCRIPil0h 0F PROBLEM:

During EFT various RC pump parameters were tonitered to assure that the punps were operating within the design limits ascribed to

  • hen.

The seal return line pressure was found to be in the range of 50-60 pounds, as measured at the rotameters.

This pressure was caused by the recirculation line from the 5

MU pump entering the seal return loop. This pressure has caused the seal j

staging of the RC pumps to becone erratic.

Specifically, the lower and/or middle seals may destage.

e FURTHER ACTION RECO:0!E:IDED BY SITE PERSO:INEL Please review the B&W ICJ Syste design and reco==end a solution to this problem.

Please investigate at least the following area's:

1.

Is the 60 pound discharge pressure of the MU recire orifice acceptable from the MU System operation standpoint?

2.

By leaving the piping arrangement as is, the potential for nor=al operation with destaged seals still exists.

Is this acceptable as a normal code of operation?

Investigate with respect to RC transient analysis and normal operation.

3.

Could the Ifd System handle the additional heat load of piping the seal returns directly to the IG tank? What other piping codifications would you recoc=end?

14 Does the potentici for this problem exist on all B&W plants?
