ARKANSAS POWER & LIGHT COMPANY POST OFFICE BOX 551 LITTLE ROCK. ARKANSAS 72203 (501) 371-4000 January 18, 1979 l-019-10 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation ATTN: Mr. R. W. Reid, Chief Operating Reactor Branch #4 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555

Subject:

Arkansas Nuclear One - Unit 1 Docket No. 50-313 License No. DPR-51 Fire Protection (File: 1510,2040)

Gentlemen:

As requested by the Fire Protection Safety Evaluation Report for ANO-1, the following information is provided for your review. The modifications described in this letter are referenced to Table 3.1 of the ANO-1 Fire Protection SER.

Items 3.3 and 3.7 We have chosen to provide deluge systems for the Cable Spreading Room and the Hallway at El 372 immediately outside it. In addition to meeting NFPA 15 requirements these systems are designed to provide .15 G.P.M. of water per square foot of cable tray area. Attached Figures 6600-M276-1-4 and 6600-M276-2-3 provide details as to th.e nozzle loca-tions and flows. Please note that the systems are designed such that nozzles are installed at all needed elevations to ensure that water impinges directly on all cable trays. These systems are actuated by heat and smoke detectors.

We will provide you with details as to which redundant conduits and trays in the Hallway at El 372 will be further protected by coating or Kaowool wrap by February 10, 1979.

Item 3.11 Attache ( rigures F-2 through F-6 and Figure F-ll show the locations of new hose stations to be installed in the Reactor Building and at El 317 of the Auxiliary Building. Each hose station has 100 feet of hose connected to it so that all safety-related equipment can be accessed.

fir. R. W. Reid, Chief January 18, 1979 Also attached is a figure showing the Fire Water Supply to the Reactor Building hose stations. The water supply to the hose station at El 317 is through 2 inch lines off a 6 inch line connected to the Fire Water Loop.

Since the current AN0-1 outage is expected to continue another 3 weeks, and parts of these modifications can only be performed during an outage, we would like to take advantage of this chance to get these modifications started before the refueling outage. Thus, to help prevent fire protection commitments from becoming critical path for the upcoming (hopefully short) refueling outage we would appreciate your most expeditious review.

Very truly yours, Daniel H. Williams Manager, Licensing DHW:M0W:ce Attachment
