4 JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT 1 NARRATIVE

SUMMARY

OF OPERATIONS DECEMBER, 1978 In December, 1978, there were two unit shutdowns (one manual shutdown and one manually initiated reactor trip).

The unit was taken off-line on December 20 when excessive moisture was noted in the exciter. An investigation indicated that the moisture was due to condensation possibly resulting from inadequate drainage. The exciter area was dried out and the exciter was inspected for damage. Subsequent investi-gation indicated that the exciter cooler temperature was also a contributing factor. The unit was returned to power on December 23. On December 31 the unit was manually tripped following a trip of both steam gene 7.cor feed pumps (due to a low suction pressure signal).T;te unit was returned to power on January 1, 1979.

The follcving significant safety related maintenance was performed in December.

1. Continued work on 1C CCW pump motor rework.
2. Reworked river water pumps 4 and 9 after vibration / bearing problems.
3. Repaired 2C DG 1A air compressor after compressor failed to unload on auto-start; repaired 1-2A DG 1A air compressor after a check valve stuck.
4. Repaired 1A boron injection pump seal / flange leakage.
5. Repaired motor driven fire pump breaker after breaker failed to close.
6. Repaired No. 1 diesel driven fire pump after indication of internal rubbing.
7. Repaired B Train penetration room exhaust fan after fan tripped on overload.
8. Replaced nuclear instrumentation system intermediate range detector N3C when N36 could not be compensated from the control drawer. Source range detector N32 was replaced with it. An N32 preamplifier was also replaced when it failed low.
