Robert W. Reid, Chief Operating Reactors, Branch No. 4 U. 5. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C.

20555 Docket No. 50-312 Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station, Unit No. 1

Dear Mr. Reid:

The purpose of this letter is to supply the NRC with additional information on proposed modifications on Class II instrumentation circuits required for safe shutdown and cooldown as required by Table 3.2 in the Fire Protaction Safety Evaluation Report (SE) for the District's Rancho Seco Unit No.1.

The required instrumentation is ideritified in Section III, Table I of the District's Fire Hazard Analysis Report.

The District's modification vill insure that no design basis fire will cause complete loss of the required indication.

This will be accomplished by having the required indication available in two seoarate locations, one in the control room and the other at a convenient location in the plant, with separate elements, transmitters and power supplies, for the indication at each location.

The District's current schedule is to complete this modification by the end of 1979 refueling outage.

To complete the modification by this schedule the District will be purchasing many of the long lead time items by March 1, 1979.

Therefore, the District requests that all staff comments and questions be submitted to the District no later than February 15, 1979 to Drevent any impact on the District's schedule.

Sincerely yours, l
