December 18, 1978 MEMORANDUM FOR: John Stolz, Chief Light Water Reactors Branch No. 1, DPM FROM:
J. Carl Stepp, Chief Geosciences Branch, DSE
SUBJECT:
SUPPLEMENTAL COMMENTS REGARDING THE NOVEMBER 6, 1978 MEETING IN BETHESDA WITH PUGET SOUND POWER AND LIGHT COMPANY PLANT NAME: Skagit Nuclear Power Project, Units 1 and 2 LICENSING STAGE: CP DOCKET NUMBERS: STN 50-522/523 With the exception of three additional items, we concur with I. Peltier's, December 5, 1978 comprehensive summary of the November 6, 1978 Puget Sound Power and Light Company (PSPL)
NRC-USGS Bethesda neeting. These additional items include (1) the status of core drillings ' borings) in the vicinity of the Little "aystack Mountain-Talc Mountain area, (2) restudying of remote sensing imagery, and (3) alternate sites. PSPL described drilling operations (Test Hole 2a) north of Little Hay-stack Mountain and felt that extending the hole beyond its present depth pf approximately 400 feet would produce little additional information. The NRC agreed that the boring could be terminated but suggested that Test Hole 3, located north of Test Hole 2a at Talc Mountain, be deepened in an attempt to reach the suggested serpentine body between Tale and Little Haystack mountains.
In conjunction with the extensive mapping being undertaken, PSPL indicated that they will be reassessiag the remote sensing imagery they had evaluated previously. The Third supplementary item, alternate sites, is listed as an agenda item. This topic was not discussed at the meeting, kt-c
