Docket No. 70-1729
Dear itembers of the Board:
Subject:
Apparent Fault in Barnwell, South Carolina Area Earlier this year in connection with the review of a nuclear power plant site, a staff geologist was informed about the existence of 35 m slides taken about two years earlier showing an anomaly that anpeared to be a fault in a trench wall at the Chem-iluelear Services commercial low-level burial operations in Barnwell, South Carolina.
The Chem-fluclear Services site is adjacent to the Barmsell fluclear Fuel plant site on which the Fuel Receiving and Storage Station (FRSS) is located.
l Duplicates of the slides were obtained and show that a fault with about a one-foo shift may be presant but the quality of resolution in the slides precludes final determination and evaluation.
The trench has since been filled and covered.
l The Division of Waste !!anagement concluded on August 13, 1979 that they did not have sufficient concern about potential impact on the burial ground to justify engaging consultants to evaluate oossible faults at the site.
fleither the Board nor the parties have enqaged in any known activities relative to the FRSS proceeding since fiay 1977 and we are unaware ~ that there are any specific plans to resume activities by any of the parties.
Therefore, we sense no urgency in evaluation of the situation by the staff.
flevertheless, we will arranqe for a staff geologist or a consultant to examine the slides, to inspect i
