ICE WORK ORDER TO BPNL You are requ :ted to issue an amendment to the technical assistance work order to Bee,elle Pacific Northwest Laboratories (BPUL) - Physical Sciences Department to provide radiological analytical suport at a site near Gallup, !!ew fiexico as described in the enclosed statenent of work (SCW).

This work is urgently needed to effect a requested environmenal impact assessment of a uranium mill tailings dam failure by Health Deprtment personnel of an Agreement State.

The staff estimates that additional funding is required for this level of effort at about $60,000, and this is consistent with our conversations with SPNL personnel.

The duration of the work will be extended approximately three months and should be completed by March 31,19

ENCLOSURE AMENDMENT TO STATEMENT OF WORK (S0W)

ANALYTICAL SUPPORT FOR THE EVALUATION OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF THE CHURCH ROCK URANIUM MILL TAILINGS DAM FAILURE NEAR GALLUP, NEW MEXICO FIN No. 82214-9 B&R No. 50-19-03-03-0 2.0 Work Reouired In addition to the previously requested work required the following tasks are to be implemented:

1.

The contractor shall perform a statistical interpretation of all the data generated from the soil / sediment sampling program and analytical results as generated by the BPNL mobile laboratory, as well as any other pertinent data supplied by the project manager. This interpretation shall include the collection, review, and summary of all the data in order to define the specific extent and depth of contamination of the Rio Puerco area and to provide an overall deposition inventory estimate.

Recommendations for a follow-up soil / sediment sampling program are also to be provided in order to verify and document the actual condition of the area after it has been decantaminated.

This effort shall be documented by the issuance of a final BPNL report to be completed within three months of termination of arroyo cleanup operations, containing all data, statistical interpretations and summary / conclusions.

In addition to item 2 of the original S0W for soil / sediment analysis, radiological and trace metal analysis services are to be provided at BPNL to assess the contamination of both ground water and surface water samples for both the soluble and suspended components.

Radiological analyses shall include radium-226, thorium-230, natural uranium, (ano possibly lead-210) on samples ranging in activity from background to several hundred picocuries per liter. Up to 100 water samples may be submitted by the PM or his authorized representative during the term of this contract, and all analytical results shall be reported within three months of termiantion of contract.

All other conditions of the 50W shall remain the same.
