October 24, 1979 C c:>M CHAIRMAN The Honorable James R. Thompson Governor of Illinois Springfield, Illinois 62706
Dear Governor Thompson:
Thank you for sending me a copy of the report of the Ad Hoc Investigating Comittee of the Illinois Commission on Atomic Energy.
It is, in my view, a thoughtful, balanced report and its recomendations deserve serious consideration.
I have asked Mr. Robert G. Ryan, Director of our Office of State Programs, to arrange a meeting with ycur comittee and staff and appropriate NRC staff to discuss how those recommendations that deal with the Nuclear Regulatory Comission might be accomplished.
I am pleased that the NRC staff has been able to assist in the development of the Illinois nuclear emergency response plan. The staff continues to be available for this purpose.
I note that your target date for having an NRC concurrance is consistent with the Senate version of FY 1980 Authorization Bill (S.562) which calls for all States where there are operating nuclear power plants to have concurred-in plans by June 30, 1980 under the threat of a shutdown.
We look forward to continuing to work with you and your people in all areas of mutual interest.
Sincerely,,f i
