Docket No. 50-344 (Control Building)

Gentlemen:

On September 6, 1979, the NRC Staff filed a motion to postpone the scheduled hearings in Phase II cf the referenced proceeding because the Staff was un-able to issue its Safety Evaluation Report (SER) on the proposed Ccntrol Building modifications.

In that. motion, tne Staff indicated that it would provide to the Licensing Board, and parties w:ekly reports on,the status of resolution of the open items and completion of the SER.

i On September 10, 1979, additional questions related to embedment of Nelson Studs, shrinkage strains and the method of calculating stresses from shrinkage in existing and new walls, the structural adequacy of rigging used in steel plate handling, and coefficients of friction between installed steel plates and concrete were telecopied to the Licensee.

Intense evaluation of the structural adequacy cf the proposed nodification has continued in order to resolve all remaining unresolved areas and to assure that all unresolved questions are fully identified and transmitted to the Licensee. Inose sections of the SER addressing operation'during the codifications, except for certain parts related to unresolved structural questicns, have been ccmpleted and are undergoing final review.

Sincerely, n0
