Decket No. 50-344 (Control Building)

Gentlemen:

On September 6,1979, the NRC Staff filed a motion to post' pone the scheduled hearing in Phase II of the referenced proceeding because the Staff was unable to issue its Safety Evaluation Report (SER) on the proposed Control Building modifications.

In that motion the Staff indicated that it would provide to the Licensing Board and parties, weekly reports on the status of resolution of the open items and completion of the SER.

Today, a nearly-completed set of comprehensive questions cove g all of the remaining items either raised by, or remaining after, the Licensee's Septem-ber 5, 1979 responses to the Staff questions is being finalized. These final questions should be received by the Licensing Board and all parties during the week of October 1, 1979. With the transmittal of these questions as well as those transmitted to the Licensee on September 14 and 19,1979, efforts to resolve the open items have progressed to the point where a meeting between the Staff and Licensee and Bechtel personnel is necessary. The purpose of the meeting is for the Staff to explain in detail the nature and quality of the information which the Staff seeks in the questions transmitted to the Licensee and for the Licensee to outline the manner in which it intends to respond and the information it will provide.

At this time, the time of the meeting has not been set. However, we have requested a meeting at the earliest time at which the Licensee will be prepared to fully discuss the matters addressed in the Staff questions.

Sincerely,

( vos rh R. Gr '
