COMMONWEALTH EDISON COMPANY

)

Docket Nos. 50-295 (ZION STATION, UNITS 1 and 2) )

50-304 APPLICANT'S MOTION FOR A CCNTINUANCE Applicant, Commonwealth Edison Company, hereby requests a two-week continuance, from October 5 until October 19, to submit affidavits in response to this Board's Memorandum and Order dated September 14, 1979.

Similar two week extensions would be afforded other parties to this proceeding in filing their responsive affidavits.

The requested continuance is needed to conduct tests to determine whether the stainless steel in the proposed racks has been sensitized by the welding process used during fabrication.

In addition, the extra time will allow a more thorough collection and analysis of existing data in stress

corrosion cracking and thus will improve the quality of Applicant's submittal.

Applicant is authorized to state that the NRC i23500I C

For the Board's information, the Applicant's examination of one of the existing racks in the Zion spent fuel pool has showm no signs of stress corrosion cracking.

A description of the tests performed and a discussion of significance of this evidence will be included in Applicant's submittal.

Respectfully submitted,
