Dear Dr. Hendrie:
The following potentially highly dangerous sitaation has come to my attention.
Sometime in Atgust about a half ton of highly radio-active " crud" is to be fitshed through the five miles of piping at the Dresden I reactor near Morris, Illinois by an essentially perimental procedure utilizing chelating agents.
Apparently, no environmental impact statement has been
.2de, nor have the potential effects on the health of the corkers involved been adequately considered.
As an organic chemist with a minor in biochemistry, I am especially worried a bo ut the environmental effects of chelated radicactive ma terial s, since chelation has the effect of making chemicals more easily i.persed th' rough the geosphere and biosphere.
Thus, I request full environmental impact sta tement before this procedure is a
> ried out.
I am also conce.ned about the high cost of this operation s'36 million dollars).
This cost among others such as vaste disposal was never considered when the economics of nuclear reactors was calculated.
Sincerely,
[f
