Dear Governor List:
This letter is in response.to your July 5 telegram regarding the shipment of radioactive waste from Consumers Power Company to the NEC0 burial site near Beatty, Nevada.
Consumers Power Company has agreed to have the 12 containers examined for liquid contents, but has experienced difficulty locating a licensed contractor who can and will perform the examination. The containers have been in storage at a contractor's facility in Pleasanton, California, since removal from the Beatty, Nevada site in July.
Consumers Power Company informs us that they expect to complete arrangements for examination of the containers within the next few weeks.
NRC will have inspectors present during portions of the examination to ascer-tain the presence and quantity of free liquid in the containers. We will inform you of our findings and of any resulting enforcement actions.
