- ear Senator Rcth:
I at writing.on behalf of our Delaware resters to ask you to make a public statement as soon as possible conderning the decision of the Three Mile Island nuclear Plant owners to vent radioactive gases into the atmosphere this Fall and to ducp hundreds of thousands of gallons of radioactive water into the Susquehanna River.
The clais by the plant's canagezent that the asount of radioactivity to be released falls within " acceptable licits" is disputed by encugh scientists to warrant extrere concern on the part of Lelaware residents who will be forced to suffer the ccnsecuences of further radioactive expcsure.
Of special ccncern are the innocent children, born and unborn.
We would like to stress that the opposition to these radioactive discharges transcends the dispute regarding nuclear power in this c ount ry.
Whatever your feel $ng re6arding the future of nuclear pcwer, we know that you must share our deep concern about zore radiation bein6 eritted from the world's test notorious reactor.
The only reason for these erissions is to get the plant back on line "as soon as possible".
Surely, all reesonable people will derand caution.
The le5acy from the original accident may not be determined for-many years.
We call upon you, as an elected representative whose vcice will be heard in Pennsylvania, to decand that RO relawarean be exposed to further, intentional radioactive discharges.
Flec se make your statement as socn as pcssible.
Thank you for your Concern.

r';o ED The Honorable William Roth United States Senate Washington, D. C.

Dear Senator Roth:
This letter is in response to your letter regarding an inquiry dated August 24, 1979 received from Mr. R. Thomas Cole concerning the venting of radioactive gases and the release of radioactive water from the Three Mile Island Facility.
With regard to Mr. Cole's concern about the release of radioactive gases and liquids, such releases are not currently permitted.
Before such releases take place, the impact will be evaluated by the NRC and the evaluation will be made available to the public.
By this course of action, we will assure that a thorough assessment is completed prior to release of the contaminated gases or liquids and that the health and safety of all offsite population groups will be protected.
An example of the type of evaluation that will be performed is that prepared by the NRC staff concerning the use of EPICOR-II to process contaminated water from the auxiliary building. The assessment only addresses'the processing of the contaminated water not the disposal of the water.
Prior to disposal, another assessment will be prepared to evaluate alternate means for disposal of the water. A copy of the Environmental Assessment is enclosed for your information.
We hope that this information will assist you in responding to your constituent.
Sincerely, menu sinnea by a. o. sin <th /d Lee V. Gossick Executive Director for Operations
