APR 2 81972 L. Low, Director, Division of Compliance REQUEST FOR STAIUS REPORT, RING GIRDER, METROPOLITAN EDISON COMPANT, THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT 1 (DOCKET NO. 50-289)
Extensive concrete voids in the northern 180* sector of the containment ring girder at Three Mile Island were reported by the applicant in July 1971. The applicant's repair procedures were reviewed and approved by DRL with DRS assistance on the basis that the southern 180* sector of the ring girder consisted of sound concrete.
Your report (C0 Report 50-289/72-04) of April 17, 1972 states that the applicant has noted that concrete voids also partially exist in the southern 180* sector. In order that we can reappraise our position with regard to the repair for the northern 180* sector and evaluate possible repair procedures for the southern 180* sector we request that CO provide DRL and DRS with an updated and detailed status report of the entire ring girder. A presentation with slides to DEL and DRS by the inspector (s) would be informative. This report on the extent of the problem should be made before we initiate our discussion with the applicant.
E. M. Howard, Senior Inspector CO Region 1, L. Baratan, Technical Assistance Branch CO, and H. Schierling PWR-2, DRL, have agreed on May 15, 1972 as a tentative date for the CO presentation.
