PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-425 h

This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety.or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on tuis date.

Facility:

Commonwealth Edison Company, Dresden Station, Morris, Illinois (DNs 5010; 50-237; 50-249

Subject:

APPARENT LEAK IN COOLING LAKE During the routine drilling of a well by a local landowner near the Dresden cooling lake, water at a temperature of about 80 degrees F was detected.

A leak in the lake is suspected by the licensee.

This water is not ordinarily' expected to contain any detec. table radioactivity; however, a confirmatory sample has been collected by the licensee.

Commonwealth Edison Corporate Environmental Staff is investigating.

The State of Illinois has been informed.

Region III (Chicago) is sending an inspector to the site.

No press release is planned by either the utility or the regional office at this time; however, based on inspection findings, this matter will be reassessed.

Region III was informed of this problem by telephone from the Resident Inspector at 10:40 a.m. on September 17, 1979.
