Dear Mr. and Mrs. Wirth:
This is in response to your letter of May 10, 1979, opposing transporting of spent fuel from the Dresden plant to the Quad Cities plant in Cordova, Illinois.
The NRC r.urrently has under review an application from Ccamonwealth Edison Company to allow the stocage of Dresden spent fuel at Quad Cities, and visa versa.
The purpose o' this proposed action is to provide more flexibility in using available storage space at either of the two sites. Spent fuel has been transported by truck and by rail for scme 30 years. Risks to public health and safety associated with this activity are well known, and the risks are very low.
A public hearing on the proposed shipment of spent fuel between the two sites will be held probably early this Fall.
This Office of the Secretary of the Commission has been requested to inform you of the time and place prior to the hearing.
