NOV 0 71979 Dear Enclosed is a draft report on the " Characterization and classification of geologic faults in the Appalachian foldbelt." We are circulating it to Earth Scientists for their information and technical review.

The report was prepared by an eight member panel of Geologists working under contract to the Nuclear Regulatory Commissica.

It was developed in response to a licensing need for:

(1) a standardized nomenclature which could be used to describe faults in the Appalachian foldbelt, and (2) a summary of their characteristics.

We plan to publish the repo'rt, after review, as a NUREG report, and a copy will be sent to the reviewers.

We welcome any comments you may have on the report, and we would appreciate receiving your comments by November 20, 1979.

Sincerely, Edward O'Donnell, Geologist Site Safety Standards Branch Office of Standards Development
