SEP 11 1979 Docket No. 50-10 The Honorable John C. Danforth United States Senator St. Louis District Office 611 Olive Street, Suite 1867 St. Louis, Missouri 63101
Dear Senator Danforth:
This is in response to your August 2,1979, request to review a July 23, 1979 letter from Professor Leonard J. Banaszak on the subject of the proposed chemical decontanination of the Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Unit No.1.
Professor Banaszak's expressed concern relating to the use of chelating agent in the chemical cleaning is based on an occurrence at Oak Ridge National Laboratory where 35 million gallons of liquid radioactive wastes, containing such chelating agents, were disposed of in burial pits and seepage trenches.
Subsequent to the disposal, some of the liquid waste seeped to the surface approximately 250 yards away from the disposal location. We have investigated that-experience; and have determined that such a problem will not occur with the Dresden 1 decontamination solution because:
- 1) the waste will be solidified before burial, and (2) the solidified waste will be sent to burial sites in dry locations where interaction with the ground water will be minimized.
Enclosed for your information are two copies of our response to Professor Banaszak's letter of July 23, 1979 to Chairman Hendrie.
I hope that this letter is responsive to your regeest.
Sincerely, ORIGINAL SIGNED BY R. G. SMITH Lee V. Gossick Executive Director for Operations
