Costello, Task i' ann::c, A-33 i SUJJi_CT: TOMO D,*J'.WE AT GolnD CHl.F SITE The tornado '..hich.hnaged the Grand rulf plant duria) the nig':t of t April 17 ulll ;>robably be classified as F1 cr F2 on the Fujita scale. T')as, it is not surprising that the visit to the site, en "gril 19, by an NRC tean consisting of nyself, H. fontecilla of GOR and C. R. l "crarland of Rcgion II, yielded no evidence of motica of significant vissiles. Damace at the plant, while of considerable dollar value, cis consistent with peak wind velocities in the 100-150 r.ph range. The attached stetch shous, approxic.ately, the direction of the tornado awl the r 1Jor dirage areas. Aerial photographs will soon be available r in a repcet fron Professor Fujita, of the University of Chicago, uho [ sur.s:y;d the site as part of an investigation of the three tornadoes t raN eted in south'., astern Mississippi that night. The areas suf fering ojor direct wind drage tere the hatch plant and suitchyard. Ho significant nissiles ucre noted in these areas.

Insbars lay where tiay fell and only shcet retal and trailers were displaced significant distances fra the batch plant location.

Darage to the cooling tower, containcent, and turbine building of Unit i vas caused by falling P construction cranas--not wind forces or missiles. Scto input to Task Action Plan A-33 ray be gotten fre.1 an an11ysis of happenings in the upper laydcun area to be perforced by Professor i Mcdonald of Texas Tech University. Some moderate r otloa of large fiberglass pipes occurred there which, when cc bined with final wind-speed estfrates, ray shed some light on f acipient i ation of missiles of pipe varlety.
