SUBJECTi TOPJiADO STRIKE AT GPAtiD GULF SITE l
I visited the Grand Gulf site, near Jackson, Mississippi, on April 19, 1978, to inspect the offects of a tornado which had struck in the evening of April 17, 1978. The tornado was estimated by Fujita to be of intensity F2, i.e., wind velocities between 100 and 150 cph, when it passed by the site.
Da m 4c :n L:.e sita arca was..uch cs my be expected frc:a a low intensity tornado. Teaporary sheet metal buildings suffered extensive j
damage, as did the switchyard area, trailer trucks were overturned, l
utility poles were torn and displaced, and debris of all sorts were scattered over the site. The most significant damage was caused by the collapse of construction cranes on the Unit 1 containment, turbine building and cooling tower.
I have a set of photographs (slides and prints) taken during ny visit showing the effects of the tornado on the site structures and sono of the objects that became airborn, i.e., missiles. Of particular interest nay be a steel pipe rack that was displaced between 200 and 300 feet; an overturned coner '.e slab; and some large fiberglass pipes that appeared to have been picked up but not transported very far.
I have shown these slides to the Envirorcental Evaluation Branch, DDR and the Accident Analysis and Hydrology-ibtcorology Branches, DSE and cade them available to Jim Costello, OSD, who has shown then to the 7910070 g
