Dr. Harold W. Lewis Department of Physics University of California Santa Barbara, California 93106 Dear Dr. L is:
Thank yo( for your letter on Three Mile Island.
I quite agree with you that one of the major lessons we have learned is the need for flexibility in responses to accidents. We will have to do more than we have done in the past in delineation of accidents in the licensing process. Upgrading in this area will surely be needed and I agree with you that risk assessment can help us greatly in this effort.
In this regard, I woul.d appreciate hearing any further thoughts you may have on specific area.s or sequences which should be given priority attention.
It also seems reasonable to expect industry to conduct further studies along this'line.
Your views on how this might be facilitated would a' iso be appreciated.
I appreciate your sharing your early thoughts with me on this most important matter.
I regret that I was not able to respond sooner but, as you know, the pace of our activities has been quitevapid as of late.
