JUN C 71979 The Honorable Harrison Williams United States Senate Washington, D.C.
20510
Dear Senator Williams:
Thank you for your letter of April 27, 1979 requesting infomation on behalf of Mr. Harry Beskind concerning the~ health effects of the accident at Three Mile Island.
I am enclosing for Mr. Beskind a copy of a preliminary assessment of the population dose and health effects of the accident at TMI prepared by an interagency group composed of NRC, EPA and HEW health physicists. The report addresses a number of the specific questions raised by Dr. Beskind concerning the release and distri-bution of iodine-131.
It is our understanding that the Department of Health, Education and Welfare and the State of Pennsylvania will conduct extensive studies of the health effects of the accident at TMI. An addi-tional study, to be undertaken with the NRC, will examine the health effects of workers at the TMI plant. You might wish to conta:.t HEW directly concerning their plans for studying the health effects of the accident.
I hope that this information is helpful in responding to Dr. Beskind's inquiry.
Sincerely, 1
Carlton Karrnerer, Director Office of Congressional Affairs
