August 16, 1979 MEMORANDUM FOR: Edward L. Jordan, Assistant Director, Livision of Reactor Operations Inspection, I&E G. Wayne Reinmuth, Assistant Director, Division of Reactor Construction Inspection, I&E FROM:
Steven A. Varga, Acting Assistant Director for Light Water Reactors, Division of Project Management
SUBJECT:
CRACKING IN FEEDWATER PIPING SYSTEM IE Bulletin No. 79-13 was recently sent to licensed epantinn facilities requesting that they perform certain examinations of the fcedwater piping systems at Westinghou:e and Combustion Engineering designed pressurized water facilities. This bulletin was also sent to applicants with plants still in the licensing review stage for information only.
However, no specific inspection requirements were stipulated.
As we discussed in our meeting, it is our understanding that you concur that the Westinghouse and Combustion Engineering designed PWR's which are still in the licensing review stage, should be required to perform an inspection of the above cited piping and report these results to you before the issuance of an operating license in accordance with the guidelines delineated in the bulletin, and that you are already moving in that direction.
Also as discussed, the enclosed priority list should be used in your activities.
Our need dates are also reflected on the list.
Please let me know if there are any problems with our schedules i\\
