739 Hillcrest Drive DeKalb, IL 60115 July 18,1979 Dr. Jpseph M. Hendrie Chairran U.S. Nuclear Regulatcry Ccmmission Washington, D.C. 20555 Dear Dr. Hendrie I am writing to urge that a full Environmental Impact Statement be cenpleted before the decentamination of Dresden I is allowed to proceed.
As you know, the procedure is costly and experimental.
No thorou6h investigation of potential environmental effedis has been done.
We do not know how the health of the workers may be affected. The cost of crud removal was not (cf course!) included in utility cost calcu-1ations.
Why compound the problems of this immature, ccstly, lifel threatening nuclear industry by attempting to extend the life of aging nuclear plants throu6h yet another untried procedure?
The public is concerned about the effects of the flushing solution with its chelating agent en the radiactive wastes to be removed from the pipes. Will it not, as in Oak Ridge, then be far more likely to nigrate from burial trenches into the environnent?
No doubt your agency is under tremendous industry pressure to give the go-ahead to this potentially dangerous procedure.
Ve, the public, are dependent on you to withstand that pressure and insure that time s
is allowed for full Environmental Impact Statement and evaluation before a decision is made.
S incerely,
UJ Cecile Meyer no,;cu Ut '5
