The Cincinnati Gas'& Electric Company (CGE)
FACILIT:
William H. Zimmer !!uclear Power Station, Unit 1 (ZPS-1)
SUBJECT:
LICEtlSE AMEllDMErlT APPLICATI0:1 DATED
,7 RIL 12, 1979
Background
CGE is licensed under !;RC Materials License flo. SitM-1823 storage of fuel and accessories for eventual use in ZPS-1, and for the use of a Pu-Be ne'2 tron source for calibration purposes.
In the subject amcndment request CGE wishes the license revised with regard to the types and capacities of fuel handling cranes to be used in connection with receipt and storage of fuel assemblies.
Discussion A fuel assembly weighs about 685 pounds and a loaded metal shipping container abou; 1900 pounds.
The ci'nes to be used for moving containers and assemblies are appropriately rated for these loads.
It is noted that while the dropping of a container or of an assembly containing unirradiated uranium would cause additional expe6ses, there would be little if any radiation hazard involved.
Recommerdation On the basis of the above I recommend approval of the application.
