Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 Operating License No. DPD-30 Docket No. 50-289 This lette.r is in response to IE Bulletin 79-09 concerning the failures of GE Type AK-2 circuit breakers in safety related systems.
Metropolitan Edison Company has determined that the GE type AK-2 circuit breakers in question are used in TMI-l as the reactor trip breakers in the Control Rod Drive System. The preventative maintenance program to assure design performance of the GE AK-2 circuit breakers will include the following itens:
1.
Procedure PM E36, which has been used for maintaining the breakers, will be updated by June 15, 1979, to include the new GE recommendations.
'. The breakers will be functionally tested monthly during i
unit ope stion and preventative =aintenance will be performed annually.
3.
The electrical maincenance personnel have received formal training in electrical maintenance practices, including maintenance of GE AK circuit breakers. The GE instructions are referenced in FM E36 and are available to the maintenance personnel.
The above actions will fulfill the program specified in IE Bulletin No. 79-09.
