June 14, 1979 (o1 OFFICE OF THE CH AIRM AN TAPd Captain John R. Batzler Commanding Officer USS NIMITZ (CVN 68)

Fleet Post Office New York, New York 09501

Dear Captain Batzler:

I feel very remiss a't taking so long to write and personally thank you for the excellent briefing, tour, and cruise aboard the NIMITZ last March 26.

Commissioner Bradford, Harold Denton, and Edson Case have asked that I convey their appreciation also.

I know you understand that we have all been almost exclusively preoccupied with the Three Mile Islend accident and its unfolding I

aftermath since March 28.

You and the officers and men of the NIMITZ are deserving of the highest praise in the operation of the ship.

We found the understariding and knowledge of everyone outstanding.

I was particularly impressed with our discussions of nuclear propulsion matters.

It has been extremely valuable for all of us to observe first hand the important application of nuclear power to military vessels.

This will be very helpful to us in future NR reviews.

Please convey our thanks and appreciation to all those aboard the NIMITZ who made our visit so informative and memorable.

I Sincerely, t

1
