SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR ORDER TO SHUTDOWN MAINE YANKEE ATOMIC POWER STATION By petition dated May 2,1979, Peter Murray, on behalf of Safe Power for Maine and Nancy Crane DeWick, requested under 10 CFR 2.2(4 that an order be issued continuing the current shutdown of the Mr.ine Yankee Atomic Power Station pending an evaluation of the effect of asymetric loading of the reactor vessel on reactor system components and support structures.

Although addressed to the Director of I&E, the subject matter of the petition appears to be more appropriately within the jurisdiction of the Director of NRR.

This office will work with your staff to develop an appropriate response to the petition under 10 CFR 2.206.

Enclosed for your use are drafts of:

1.

A letter of acknowledgment to Mr. Murray; 2.

A letter of transmittal to the Licensee; and 3.

A notice of receipt of request for publication in the Federal Register.

If these drafts are not changed, they need not be returned to this office for concurrence.

However, please provide us a copy of the outgoing letters and notice and refer other correspondence related to this matter to this office for concurrence.
