Dear Sir:
This letter is to confirm the telephone conversation between Mr.
W.D.
Johnson (NRC, Region IV) and Mr.
J.P. O'Hanlon (Arkansas Nuclear One, General Manager) at 1215 on July 14, 1979.
This is reported to you in accordance with T.S.
6.12.3.l(i).
Arkansas Power & Light Company has been informed by its architect engineer, Bechtel Power Corporation, San Francisco Div.,
that during a design review of the Main Steam piping inside con-tainment, it was discovered that the transient dynamic loads resulting from rapid closure of the turbine main stop valves had not been included in the design of the main steam pipe supports and restraints located inside the containment.
This analysis pre-dicts that the piping stress exceeds the code allowable stress at one location.
ANO-1 is presently in a cold shutdown condition.
A review of the existing pipe supports and restraints to determine adequacy is in progress.
This review will be completed prior to startup.
Addition-ally, modifications necessary for plant operation that are identified by this review will also be completed prior to startup.
Bechtel also informed Arkansas Power & Light Co. that this problem is restricted to ANO-1; ANO-2 is not affected.
