TRIP REPORT TO THREE MILE ISLAND i have reviewed your 2raf t memo subject as above and have the fol-lowing connents.
Year trip report failed tc make mention of the fact that several times during our discussions, vm emphasized the need for definitive criteria for shallow land buria;
<? rounds.
The lack of any existing criteria as to what is acceptable for burial is a deficiency which needs to be corrected.
h hout these criteria we are forced to make decisions on solidification processes based on engineering judg-ments as to what we believe will be acceptable sometime in the future.
Utilities are reluctant to purchase and install solidification systems when they are not sure if the product produced will be acceptable two, threa or five years from now. As I indicated to you at f ne time of our meeting, I belive it is imperative that f; MSS develop interim criteria 30 that we in NRR can make decisions as to the 1eed for so-lidifications of " wet" waste produced at nuclear power pi ants.
