Dear Sir:

On April 19 and 24, Public Service Cor ,4ssion (PSC) Staff conferred with staff and consultants of New York State Electric & Gas with reference to interrogatories 10 and 11 dealing with Part 74 of 16 NYCRR (letter dated April 5, 1979).

These requested specific statistical analyses of ecological data presented in the New Haven Environmental Report (ER).

The requested information pertained to additional analyses pertinent to the intake location rationale (ER p 5.1 -

11, 12, 13). Principle components included, for each major taxa overall, (yearly) means of each pctential intake locale and a statement as to the probability that measured differences are real.

In conference, NYSE&G staff proposed a different analysis from the one requested by PSC Staff in the interrogatcries.

This is necessary because insufficient data exists to conduct the analyia and the data available is not kept on ccmputer, making presentation in the manner requested by PSC Staff a laboricus process.

It was agreed in conference '$at the applicant would provide the fellcwing in reply to the interrogatcry 13. The taxa c: r s c; -

M. J. Ray Page 2 May 17, 1979 Pontoporeia would be dropped from the response since the few data are not amenable to analysis. The analysis of Gammarus spp. and total macroinvertebrates would consist of a 2 way ' NOVA (location X level) in which each datum included would be r average (mean) of the total data included with each cell (complete Block Design).

Ichthyoplankton analyses would consist of 2 way ANOVA (Location X Date) with 6 replicates per cell (surface mid and bottom samples) .

The analyses of total ichthyoplankten would be dropped as the construction of the data matrix would require laborious manual manipulation far in excess of information te be derived.

PSC Staf f recognizes that alternate analyses may fulfill the intent of the interrogatory and is thereby willing to accept alternate responses, if they ~

ompanied by detailed description of the methodology aEd asses ated documentation.

Sincerely,
