On June 17, 2019, staff from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), National Nuclear Safety Administration (NNSA)/U.S.
Department of Energy (DOE), and Los Alamos National Laboratories had a conference call to discuss the requests for additional information (RAls) (ADAMS Accession No. ML19126Al41) for Revision 3 on the certificate of compliance (CoC) of the Model No.
435-B. The applicant provided its initial thoughts for the RAis (ADAMS Accession No. ML19161Al55). The discussion was focused on the document provided by the applicant.
RAI-OP-1 The disposal canisters are not the containment vessel. The applicant pointed out that there was only one port for venting or vacuum drying. (There is only one port on the lid (see Section 1.2.1.6.2, page 1.2-7).] Since the application uses the terms "vent port" and "lid port," the staff suggested to verify and revise the application, as necessary, to ensure using consistent terminology.
RAI-Co-1 This RAI was the same as the one asked for the Model No. 1105-SD (a similar package to the Model No. 435-B). The staff pointed out that the same response as the one provided for the Model No. 1105-SD would be appropriate.
RAI-Co-2 The staff noted that the applicant should specify the torque value in the appropriate sections of Chapters 7 and 8. The applicant should also include the following information:
- 1. verify that the plugs are tighten (with the corresponding torque value),
- 2. add a statement that mentions the "vent port," and
- 3. torque values (e.g., leak test and pre-leakage test), as needed.
