Discussion of 435-B Second Set Questions_070819.docx Importance:
High Good Morning Norma,
I have had a number of conversations with the applicant to make sure we are moving ahead in the right direction and at the right pace.
The applicants proposed responses to your three additional RAIs for the 435-B SAR, Rev 5, are attached for your consideration.
Id like to respectfully request concurrence from you and your team member on the attached responses by the end of this week.
I would like to know if theyre on target for resolution before they roll them into their final RAI response submittal. If a call is warranted for clarification, please let me know at your earliest convenience.
Thank you for the continued support.

[EXTERNAL] RE: Request for Information: Materials Evaluation
- Chad,
While the approach to responding to the NRCs emailed additional RAIs is changing, I wanted to follow up on our correspondence from last Wed. on the revised discussion of second set of questions document. We had additional input from NA-212 on the document and it was revised accordingly (see attached). Please review at your convenience and let us know if youd like to discuss further.
Thanks again.
Mark

RE: Request for Information: Materials Evaluation
Good Afternoon Mark,
After talking with Norma last week and establishing agreement of timely renewal, she is honoring my request to provide a NRC letter of timely renewal to the NNSA. This will also be used to renew the DOT CAC.
The three additional (albeit last minute) RAIs will formally be formally responded to in your responses to the NRC. They have to be formalized beyond the scope of email correspondence, so this is how I have chosen to do so. We should also be sure to add the details associated with the date of receipt of the three additional RAIs and the time delay introduced by addressing the 11th hour submittal.
If you have any further questions, you know where to find me. Have a great afternoon.

[EXTERNAL] RE: Request for Information: Materials Evaluation
Good morning Chad.
See the attached discussion of NRCs questions posed below. Can you please review this and forward on to the NRC if deemed acceptable. If possible, we would like to address these questions through email correspondence rather than introducing them into the formal RAI response.
As always, we are open to a follow up conference call if necessary.
Thanks.
Mark

FW: Request for Information: Materials Evaluation Importance: High
Good Afternoon Gentlemen,
After recent discussions with the NRC regarding the resolution of Revision 5 RAIs, it looks like there are three addition RAIs the NRC would like for us to roll into our response to the existing RAIs. All
three additional RAIs are focused on weld and NDE specifications.
The three additional RAIs are noted below.
- 1. Provide material, weld and NDE specifications for both the IBL 437 Type 1 and Type 2, Figures 2.7-10 through 2.7-13 of the SAR, payload canisters and source baskets including welding details/symbols.
The Model 435-B transport package SAR, Revision 5, does not provide drawings and/or figures with material and weld specification for the IBL 437 Type 1 and 2. Information similar to Figures 1.2-19 through 1.2-21 and Figures 2.7-3 and 2.7-9 of the SAR with added welding/NDE details is required.
The application shall include a description of the proposed package components in sufficient detail to identify the package accurately and provide a sufficient basis for evaluation of the package.
This information is needed to determine compliance with 10 CFR 71.33.
- 2. Provide complete material/welding/NDE specifications including welding details/symbols for Figures 2.7-3 and 2.7-9 of the SAR, for canister, transport shield and source baskets.
Material specifications are required for the carbon steel shells and structural parts including the paint. Specifications are also required for the stainless steel (including type) for the internal sleeves, tubes or pipes. Welding/NDE specifications/requirements are required. The application shall include a description of the proposed package components in sufficient detail to identify the package accurately and provide a sufficient basis for evaluation of the package.
This information is needed to determine compliance with 10 CFR 71.33.
- 3. Provide welding/NDE specifications/requirements for Figures 1.2-19 through 1.2-21, including welding details/symbols.

Please contact me Monday 6/24 with any questions you may have.
