PUBLIC OUTREACH MEETING
SUMMARY
- FUEL FABRICATION FACILITIES On May 16, 2019, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) conducted a public meeting to discuss the performance of the Nuclear Fuel Services (NFS) facility with stakeholders as part of the Licensee Performance Review process (ADAMS Accession Number ML19149A554).
However, some stakeholders were dissatisfied with the open house format of that meeting and requested the NRC to have a more formal meeting. Thus, on July 16, 2019, the NRC conducted a second meeting to give the public an additional opportunity to discuss topics associated with the operation of Fuel Fabrication Facilities. The main purpose of the July 16, 2019 meeting was to accommodate those who requested a more conventional meeting. The meeting took place at the Town Hall in Erwin, Tennessee. Enclosed are a list of attendees and a copy of the handouts provided at the meeting.
The NRC staff had the opportunity to listen to concerns and answer questions from members of the public, members of the Erwin Citizens Awareness Network (ECAN), and local press. In general, questions from the public were related to: 1) plutonium in areas near the NFS facility, 2) impact of NFS operations on public health and the environment, 3) information contained in NRC inspection reports, 4) data reported in NFSs effluent monitoring reports, 5) down-blending operations at NFS, and 6) status of radioactive waste transports from NFS. The NRC received a feedback form and additional questions after the meeting. The NRC staff plans to follow up on the questions and comments in accordance with agency policy and procedures.
