Subject:

Calvert Cliffs ?iuclear Power Plant Units fios. 1 & 2, Docket ?ios. 50-317 L 50-318 IE Bulletin 03 Longitudinal Weld Defects in ASME SA-312 type 30h Stainless Steel Pipe Spools Manufactured by Younrstown Weldinc and Evineerine Cornany Gentlemen:

Please refer to our response dated April 16, 1979 on the subject bulletin in which we outlined a progran for volutetric examinntion of longitudinal velds in the piping =anufactured by Youngstown Welding and Engineering Ccepany.

We have nov reviewed the radiorraphs of the velds in accordance with the procra outlined in our response. It s13 found during the review that the radiographs of sene circunferential velds could not be interpreted for the entire specified length of icncitudinal veld due to the interference of superimposed veld nonenclature data over the circunferential sean.

Hence, ve ultrasonically tested all specified longitudinal velds that could not be evaluated from the existing radiocraphs. The ultrasonic exanina-tion vas conducted on one hundred percent of 'he longitudinal veld in a spol piece as opposed tc the sampling technique outlined in our program.

Consequently, our examination covered forty-five feet of longitudinal velds in piping located in the Unit ?io. 1 containnent and in the Auxiliary Building of both Units out of a total of approximately forty-eight feet for both Units of Calvert Cliffs. The remaining three feet of piping are located in the Unit ??o. 2 containment, which could not be accessed since the unit is in operation.

Boyce H. Grier May 29, 1979 We believe that this program of radiographic review as supplenented by ultrasonic examination provides good assurance of the quality and integrity of the piping velds addressed in IE Bulletin 79-03 Very truly v urs,
