Dear Dr. Hendrie; I writi this letter with sone hesitation since I reccgnize the unu. ually high demands being placed on you at this particular tine.
First, we all wish to express our appmciation for the efforts of Dr. J.D. TMleur of your office of International Programs in keeping us inforned of develop: Tents at Three Mile Island. We have found it nest helpful to obtain daily accounts of prelirinary information from an authoritative souroa. I hope
~oe can continm to do this recognizing the rany derands frcra others.
You can well understand that we are anxious to review Canadian Peactors in light of the events at Three Mile Island.
We have received frce Dr. Lafleur currently available inforration on the sequence of events which led to the prcblems at the plant.
On the basis of this inforration we are asking our licensees to do a prelircinary review of their designs and operating procedums to daterrine if any changes are necessary.
In order to allcw us to ensure that subsequent reviews would adequately take into account all the relevant experience at 'Ihree Mile Island I would like to request that you send us any authoritative reports that you prepare on the incident. I expect that your reciew will take renths to comlete and we would appreciate receipt of any interira recorts you prepare. This regmst is rather open-ended and I leave it to your discretion to determine how best you are able to acccno-date us.
I have expressed orally to Dr. Iafleur our willingness to assist in any way your deem appropriata.
In particular, you may wish to call upon Fr. Jim Donnelly the President of Atcric Energy Of Canada Lirited to arrange for a briefing of the Cccrcission bv senior AECL personnel on the lessons learned during the rehabil:- 3 6 6 045 itation of the NRX Pesearch Paactor follcwing the 1952 accident.

Similarly, at an appropriate tine, I believe it would be mutually beneficial for a small group of IECB, IECL and provincial utility nuclear safety personnel to meet with scne of your staff to exchange infomation on the results of our respective analyses of neasures taken to prevent the Three Mlle Island type of accident. Once again we would be guided by your views on how this could best b3 acccrplished.
