Dear M . Grier:

In a lett2r dated April 17, 1979 you transmitted IE Bulletin No. 79-09 titled " Failures of GE Type AK-2 Circuit Breaker in Safety Related Systems."

Boston Edison Company was requested to take the following actions in a re-view of this problem at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station:

1. Determine whether or not GE Type AK-2 Breakers are used or planned for use in safety related systems at your facility.

Response

GE Type AK-2 Breakers are used in safety related systems at Pilgrim Station, but do not contain the undervoltage device (an optional accessory) as identified in the bulletin.

.. If such circuit breakers are used or planned for use, identify the safety system involved and provide in written form your plans for developing a preventive maintenance program which will assure design performance with GE Type AK-2 circuit breaker.

Response

The safety systems involved with GE Type AK-2 Breakers are the safety related 480V Load Centers B1, B2 and B6.

Existing Station Procedures (listed below) already provide a pre-ventive maintenance program to assure design performance for the subj ect breakers,

a. PNPS Procedure No.3.M.3 480V Load Center Breaker Trip Device Calibration Test.
b. PNPS Procedure No.3.M.3 Inspection and Overhaul of 48C' Load Center Breakers.

3. The program shall include as a minimum but not be limited to the following:
a. Establish and adhere to a preventive maintenance schedule regarding the subject circuit breakers.

Response

The above mentioned preventive maintenance procedures are per-formed each refueling cycle.

b. Have the maintenance performed by qualified personnel. The GE power circuit breaker instruction manual should be used as guid-ance in setting up the maintenance procedures.

Response

The GE power circuit areaker instruction manual was utilized as a guidance when the procedures were written, and maintenance on the breakers is always performed by qualified personnel.

c. During the preventive maintenance, perform the recommended corrective actions described in the enclosed GE Service Alert Letter No. 175 (CPDD) 9.3, dated April 2,1979. A copy of this letter is enclosed for your information and appropriate use.

Response

No response is deemed necessary to this item since the GE Ser-vice Alert Letter contains recommended corrective actions per-taining to optional undervoltage devices, which as already stated, are not in use at Pilgrim Station.

We trust that you will find this information satisfactory; however, should you desire additional information, please contact us.

Very truly yours, c  : - / cWM
