Dear Mr. Ruch:

Re: Farley Nuclear Plant NPDES Permit No . AL 00 24619 In accordance with Part II.A.2 of the referenced permit, we are submitting a non-compliance that occurred as indicated by analysis perfor=ed on July 6,1979, for the turbine building sump ef fluent (Discharge Point 004). Analysis of the effluent showed a pH value of 9.27. Approximately 24,900 gallons of this waste water was dis- _

charged after being diluted with approximately 400,000 gallons of once through cooling water.

- The cause for this non-compliance was that the procedure governing the discharge from the turbine building sump was not cicar enough to ensure proper analysis and treatment of this water prior to discharge.

Although steps were enken af ter the June discharge to eliminate the problem, further steps to clarify the procedure are currently underway.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Yours very truly,
