BIG ROCK FOI:IT PLAUT - RESPO:ISE TO REQUEST FOR ADDITIO:!AL I:lFORMATIO:I NEEDED TC EVALUATE TOPIC VI-1, "ORGAIIIC MATERIALS A:iD POST-ACCIDENT CHEMISTRY" 1.
Estimate the areas and thicknesses of the tajor protective coating systems inside containment, including aluminum and ninc base paints, epoxy paints, acrylic Jacquer, etc.
Response - 90,000 sq ft; 5 - 8 mils 2.
Indicate whether these coating systens and their methods of application were qualified according to the recontendations of Regulatory Guide 1.5h.
Response - Big Rock Point was constructea before the issuance of Regulatory Guide 1 5k; the coatings and application are rat qualified to Regulatory Guide 1 5h.
3 If not, describe the QA provisions which were used to assure proper appli-cation.
Response - None, however work vas done to an approved specification and, althoush no formal QA progran existed at the time BRP was constructed, the normal on-site reviews and inspections were done routinely.
h.
For coatings not qualified with Regulatory Guide 1 5h, describe the present condition of the coatings, including estimates of the amounts of flaking, peeling, cracking, bubbles, etc.
Response - Coatings that are deteriorating are, as a matter of course, removed and resurfaced. Generally the coatings are in very good condition.
5 Estimate the quantity of other miscellaneous coating caterials (such as on snubbers) not qualified according to Regulatory Guide 1.5h.
Response - This estination is included in the total given in Item 1.
6.
Estimate the types and amounts of other organic materials such as electrical insulation inside containment.
Response - Electrical insulation approximately 65 cu ft, other organic caterials estimated to be 100 cu ft.
7 In addition to the information described above for organic coating systeca, we vill need the following information with respect to the related Topic VI-5, " Combustible Gas Control:" Esticate the surface area and thickness of aluminum, sinc and galvanized steel inside containment.
Response - Aluminum - not including =aterial in the spent fuel pool; surface area estimated to be 700 sq ft and a volume of about 70 cu ft.
Galvanised steel - sinc coated - primarily ductvork and cable trays; surface area 3,hCO sq ft; no thickness has been estinated.
