REPORT OF ACTIVITIES AT THREE MILE ISLAND 1.

1630, 5/10/79 Assigned to the Environmental Monitoring Group Duty Hours:

Snmary of activities performed: Assigned as Environmental Shift Coordinator, 12 - 8 shift, Environmental Monitoring Group.
Routine duties included dispatching field monitoring tears for plume surveys, recording data from survey teams and pertinent in-plant monitoring data for Unit 2, directing environ = ental soil, vegetation, and water sampling activities based on surveys and TLD conitoring station results.
Received and recorded results of environ = ental samples from mobile laboratories. Received and recorded M S in-flight survey data for routinely scheduled surveillance flights. Kept a daily log of shift activities, including =eteorological and environmental parameters for ground surveys. Non-routine duties included:
dispatching NRC teams to specific areas when. informed by in-plant HP that a release was i=minent.
Dispatching special ARMS flights for aerial surveys during releases. Directing spec.lal sampling fc airborne and ground iodine contamination during and after periods of releases.
Others as directed by the Environmental Survey Teams Group Leader.

Cocaents on licensee operations: Very little contact was made with licensee personnel.

Comments on IE cperations: During this period the magnitude of radioactivity releases from Unit 2 were so low as to be essentially non-detectable off-site. Routine environmental surveys served to establish that radiation levels off-site were consistent with natural background levels for the Middletown area. A recommendation was made to the Envi nmental Group Leader to suspend routine environmental surveys curing the nighttime hours.
