Dear Ms. Abel:

This is in response to your letter dated May 30, 1979 in which you requested, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, documents regarding the transportation of nuclear materials through southern Illinois, and information on the Paducah, Kentucky facili ty and the Allied Chemical Company Plant in Metropolis, Illinois.

In p*tial response to your request, the documents listed on the Appendix are enclosed.

The specific information requested, concerning details of nuclear caterial shipments through the southern part of Illinois, is not required by NRC regulations and thus not available in NRC files.

Primary reliance for safety in transportation of radioactive material is placed on the packaging, mt routing, as explained in the enclosure " Transportation of Nuclear Fuel and Waste".

Also, we have enclosed the package designs for which Allied Chemical Corporation, Metropolis, IL is currently registered (May 8, 1979). Details on the specific package designs are available at the cost of $0.03 per page from the NRC Public Document Room,1717 H Street, N.W., Washington, DC 20555.

Goodyear Atomic Corporation, Paducah, KY uses package designs approved by the Department of Energy.

Radiation levels and placarding requirements are prescribed by Department of Transportation regulations 49 CFR $173.393(i) and (j) and Subpart F, 49 CFR Part 172, respectively.

Regarding information on the number and kinds of transportation accidents, we have enclosed a paper, "A Review of Five Years Accident Experience in the U.S. A. Involving Nuclear Transportation (1971-1975)."
