SUBJECT:
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF TMI 2 ACCIDENT l
t On March 30, 1979, Dr. Joel Sohn, Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, was referred to me by Phil Reed, RES, regarding fish sample 5
i collection at TMI during and following the current incident. The purpose of his call wcs to advise me to preserve collected fish by freezing rather than in alcohol or formaldehyde so that ge ietic examination can be made to determine the e ffect of the radionuclide releases on exposed populations.
I informed him that NRC did not itself sample biota and'that fish collection and other environmental monitoring programs were ccnducted by the licensee via a private contractor.
It is probable that ESB will receive additional inquiries concerning the environmental impacts of this TMI incident, especially in connection with Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay biota.
I recommend that we initiate development of a plan for obtaining available monitoring information and for analyzing it to determine whether observable impacts are occurring.
This analysis would also be useful for future assessment of the environmental impacts of accidents.
