UDALL CGI'MITTEE Ii;'!ESTIGMION/HEARIN'iS IriTO ThE TMI-2 ACCIDENT AND NUCLEAR POLICY ISSUES As indicated in the enclosed press release, the Subcoral tee on Energy and the Environ.,cnt of the House Comnittee on Interior and Insular Affairs has created a task force to investigate the TI1I-2 accident and intends to hold a series of hearirigs on US nuclear policy follcwing the task force's investigations.
In addition to the Members identified in the enclosure, riep. Richard Cheney (R-h'yo. ) and Bruce ' lente (D-Minn. )
will serve on the task force.
The hearings are expected to address the follo..ing:
1.
Three Mile Island and Nuclenr Reactor Safety tay ?1 and P The Subco,mittee will look at the ef fects of ee !"'-2 accicent on:
a.
requiremants for additional research cn the effects of staall-break accidents, b.
rcadification of If,E inspection precedures and the residan; inspector prol; ram, and c.
standardization of clant d25igns.
The Cocaissioners will be invited to testify at the May 21 hearing.

Security in the Domestic Nuclear Industry - June 11 and la The Subccmittee will consider the types of threats and tre ability of the regulations to protect nuclear naterials and facilities.
The Subccomittee will also consider if D0D should have responsibility for protection of facilities which process naval reactor fuel. The Commissioners will be invited to testify on June ll.
4.
Nuclear h'aste Storage and Regulation - June 25 and 28 These hearings will cover all aspects of the nuclear. taste problem including Federal management of waste and State participation in siting of waste storage facilities and regulation of waste transportation. The Ccmmissioners will be invited to testify on June 25.
5.
Price-Anderson Act and I;uclear Liability - July 9 Liability limitations and financial protection will be covered; consideration will be given to accidents which the Act does not cover, including those at waste storage facilities. The Commissioners will be invited to testify.
6.
Nuclear Economics - July 12 Comparison of total nuclear. pcwer costs (including decom-missioning and waste disoosal) w1th electric power produced by coal.
