1757 (. '.. - Revision 1 ^ ~ 02/14/77 THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR STATION STATION HEALTH PHYSICS PROCEDURE OPERATION AND SOURCE CHECK OF EBERLINE HFM-3 1.0 PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to describe in detail the operation and source check of the Eberline tirM-3 Hand and Foot Monitor. 2.0 DISCUSSION 2.1 The Hand and Foot Monitor is designed to provide a fast, efficient means of detecting the presence and general location of beta-gamma contaminaticn on the hands, shoes and clothing of personnel. 2.2 The instrument design allows an individual to monitor himself rapidly. 2.3 The five meters mounted on the front panel indicate in counts per minute the amount of contamination present in the speceified areas, while a speaker with variable volume control gives audible indication i of contamination. 2.4 Ali detecting elements are designed for easy decontamination. 2.5 _ A roll of No. 30 weight Kraft paper,18 inches wide is housed in the car at and is accessible through the frnnt door. The paper is pulled across the top of the foot chambers to prevent contaminated L dust or dirt from entering. }

Revision 1 02/14/77 4.3 E-520 Source Block 5.0 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 5.1 _ Insure the power switcn is on. 5.2 Step on shoe deck. 53 Place hands in the hand probe openings. 5.4 Observe readings on proper indicators. 5.5 If alarm indicates, decontaminate appropriately. 5.6 The clothing probe is always active and it is only necessary to remove it from its holder for use. 5.7 This probe has a movable beta shield which can be rotated to cover the tube for ganma measurements only. 5.8 There are three settings for each detector X1, X10, and X100. 5.9 To reset an alarm press the reset (red) button on the front console. 5.1 Source Che.ck j 5.1.1 Place the E520 source block, face down, on the right foot channel of the monitor. ~ 5.1.2 The channel marked "right foot" should go into the alarm condition giving an upscale reading and an audible alarm ~ sound. 5.1.3 Remove the source and clear the alarm condition by depressing the commen reset (red) button on the front console. I 5.1.4 Repeat steps 5.1.2 and 5.1.3 for the lef t foot, right hand, left hand and the external probe channels. 5.1. 5 If any channel does not go into the alarm condition, submit a work request to the I&C Department. Make a' notation of the work re',uest submittal on the H.P. Daily Work Sheet so that the Radiation Protection Foreman will be aware of the situation. ~1 2.0 202 12o _ _ _ _}}
