,. 1751 2/8/74 Revision 0 THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR STATION HEALTH PHYSICS PROCEDURE Operation and Calibration of Eberline E-520 Geiger Counter 1.0 PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to explain in detail the operation and calibration of E-520 Geiger counter.
2.0 DISCUSSION 2.1 The E-520 Geiger counter is a portable, battery operated instrument for the detection and measurement of gamma and beta radiation.
It is calibrated to read gamma fields in mR/hr. Two Geiger tubes are used to cover the range of detection of the instrument. A small internal tube is used on the highest range 0-2 R/hr 200, 0-20, 0-2 and 0.2 mR/hr use the ex %rnally mounted Geiger tube which is sensi-tive to both gamma and beta.
2.2 When the gas in the Geiger tube is ionized by radiation, an electrical pulse is created which is amplified, shaped and converted to a pulse of current which is used to drive the meter.
2.3 The controls and connections are described in Section 5.0

Revision 0 5.0 OPERATIf1G INSTRUCTIONS 5.1 Description of external controls and connections.
5.1.1 Seven position switch turns the instrument 0FF, check the battery condition and selects scale multipliers of X100, X10, X1.0, X.1, and X.01.
5.1.2 RESPONSE control pot that allows response time selection between 2 ano 10 seconds.
5.1.3 RESET switch which rapidly brings the meter reading to zero.
5.1.4 DETECTOR connector to the external probe.
5.1.5 PHONE connector allows connection to earphones or external scaler.
5.2 Description of internal controls.
5.2.1 Five calibration controls, one for each range, which indivi-dually calibrates that range to agree with the input pulse i'
rate.
5.3 Using the Instrument 1
5.3.1 Set the switch to the BATT position. The meter should read in the BATT OK region.
If not, change the batteries per the
~
E-520 Technical Manual,Section IV A 1.
5.3.2 Set the switch to the range position appropriate to the field to be measured.
5.3.3 Read the meter and multiply the reading by the multiplying factor selected by the switch.
5.3.4 The E-520 measures the field at the detector in use.
The internal detector is used on the X100 position.
NOTE:
Turn meter off when
- t in use.

1751 Revision 1 5.4 Calibration 5.4.1 Remove case from E520 by releasing end latches.
~
CAUTION:
E-520 contains internal High Voltage wh;ch is a potential hazard.
5.4.2 Set range switch to X100.
Expcse internal detector to a Gamma Field of approximately 1.5 R/hr. Adjust X100 calibration control for an equivaient meter reading. (See Figure 1751-1).
5.4.3 Set range switch to X10.
Expose external detector to a Gemma Field of approximately 150 mR/hr. Adjust X10 calibration control for an equivalent meter reading. (See Figure 1751-1).
5.4.4 Set range switch to Xl.
Expose external detector to a Gamma Field of approximately 15 mR/hr. Adjust X1 calibration control for an equivalent meter readir (See Figure 1751 ').
5.4.5 Set range switch to X.1.
Expose external detector to a Gamma Field of approximately 1.5 mR/hr. Adjust X.1 calibration control for an equivalent meter reading. (See Figure 1751-1).
r 5.4.6 Set range switch to X.01.
Expose external detector to a Gamma Field of approximatel.,.15 mR/'. Adjust X.01 calibration control for an equivalent meter reading. (See Figure 1751-1).
5.4.7 Recheck all calibration points adjust as necessary.
Place a calibration sticker on instruments, initial, date, and enter due date.
Record this information in the instrument calibration book in the Health Physics Lab.
