1748 Revision 0 02/14/77 THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR STATION STATION HEALTH PHYSICS PROCEDURE 1748 OPERATION AllD CALIBRATION OF THE EBERLINE PIC-6A 1.0 PURPOSE _
The purpose of this procedure is to explain in detail the operation and calibration of the Eberline PIC-6A.
2.0 DISCUSSION The PIC-6A is a small, lightweight portable instrument which measures the dose rate from gamma radiation.
The detecting element is a gas filled ionization chamber operating in the proportional (gas multiplication) reg on.
Six decades of dose rate, from (1) MR/hr. to 1000 R/hr.,
i are measured in two ranges of three decades each.
A single rotary switch turns the instrument 0FF, provides a BATTERY check, and selects the r.ange.
A beta window in the bottom of the instrument provides for the detection of energetic beta particles.

5.1.2 Turr. the single rotary switch to the MR/hr. range, and check that the instrument responds to radiation by use of a check source, located in the f;1e cabinet in the H.P. Lab, marked source drawer.
~
5.1.3 If the battery check is good and the instrument responds to radiation, the instrument can be used for surveys providing it has an up to date calibration on it.
5.1.4 Upon completion of use of the instrument turn the instrument "0FF" and return it to the H.P. Lab.
5.2 Calibration of the PIC6A.
5.2.1 Each range is individually calibrated by a ZERO and a SPAN control.
5.2.2 Unlach the latches on each end of the instrument and remove the top from the bottom.
5.2.3 For calibration of the MR/hr. scale the R-10 pot is for the ZERO control, and the R-12 pot is for the SPAN control.
5.2.4 Place the instrument in a (1) one MR/hr. radiation field and adjust R-10 until a reading of (1) MR/hr. is indicated on the meter.
5.2.5 Place the instrument in a (1) R/hr. radiation field, and adjust R12 until a reading of (1) R/hr. is indicated on the meter.
5.2.6 Repeat steps 5.2.4 and 5.2.5 until both.he (1) MR/hr. and the (1) one R/hr. is indicated on the meter.
5.2.7
' For calibration of the R/hr. scale the R-9 pot is for the ZERO control and the R-ll pot is for the SPAN control.

02/14/77 Place the instrument in a (1) one R/hr. radiation field and S.2.d adjust R-9 until a reading of (1) one R/hr. is indicated on
- the meter.
t 5.2.9 Place the instrument in a radiation field, in the 50 Ci CS-137 Source, that is the highest obtainable and adjust R-ll until this reading is indicated on the meter.
See HPP 1635 for exposure rates associated with the 50 Ci Cs-137 source.
5.2.10 Repeat steps 5.2.8 and 5.2.9 until both readings are indicated correctly on the meter.
5.2.11 Upon completion of the calibration olace the top section into the bottom section and latch both 'st ;hes, one located on each end of the insturment.
5.2.12 Place a calibration sticker on the instrument, log in the calibration log book in the H.P. lab.
These instruments will be calibrated on a quarterly basis according to H.P.P.1749.
