Revision 1 10/10/78 THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR STATION STATION HEALTH PHYSICS PROCEDURE 1717 OPERATION OF RESPIRATORY TEST B0CiH 1.0 PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to outline the steps taken to determine the effectiveness of respiratory protection on personnel.
2.0 DISCU5SION The Model FE259 Polydisperse DOP Aerosol Test System is used to provide the quantitative manfit testing of respiratory equipment.
The system consists of a linear forward light scattering photometer, an aerosol generator, a dilution air system and a chart recorder.
The system will be utilized in conjunction with a test booth to provide measurement of aerosol penetration between respirator and individual.

4.0 EQUIPMENT l
Full -face filter respirator.
5.0 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 5.1 Startup procedure 5.1.1 Check switches in the following positions:
Power switch - 0FF j
LAMP ON/0FF switch - 0FF, SAMPLE SELECTOR switch - UPSTREAM, SAMPLE - CLEAR switch - CLEAR, SAMPLE PUMP - 0FF, COMPRESSOR -
0FF and DILUTION AIR BLOWER - 0FF.
5.1.2 Turn on power to detector electronics and allow to warm up (approximately 15 minutes).

1717 Revision 0 06/16/78 5.1.3 Check that DOP level in the generator can is 1/4" to 1" above the base of the generator nozzle.
If necessary, add DOF by a _ removing the plug in plate on top of generator can and pour DOP in fill hole.
Replace plug after filling.
5.1.4 Check that there is no DOP in the impactor can.
Empty contents from impactor can by removing the four screws wS;ch hold the can to tne support plate.
Re-install can after emptying.
5.1.5 Turn dilution air blower switch on front panel to ON position.
5.1.5 Use the variabie potentiometer flow control to adjust the blower speed to the maximum available and back off 1/4 turn.
5.1.7 Turn compressor on.
Using the geaerator pressure adjust valve and gauge, adjust the generator pressure to 4 PSIG.
5.1.8 Turn sampling pump on.
Use the Potentiometer on the front panel no set the sampling rate to 9 liters / min.
5.1.9 Select ON on the Lamp ON/0FF switch.
5.1.10 With the SAMPLE-CLEAR switch on CLEAR and the RANGE switch on the.1% range, adjust the stray light control for zero meter
~
reading.
Return the RANGE switch to 100%
L 5.1.11 Select " SAMPLE" on the SAMPLE - CLEAR switch.
5.1.12 Use the photomultiplier tube (PMT) gein to adjust the meter I
reading to 100% (iull scale) 5.1.13 Repeat steps 5.1.10 through 5.1.12 until each step can be per-formed without further adjustments to STRAY LIGHT or PMT Gain.
NOTE:
If STRAY LIGHT and 100% caanot be adjusted refer to Model FE259 operating manual.

1717 Revision 1 10/10/78 5.2 Testing of Individuals s
5.2.1 Complete Startup prc;edure (if testing unit is not in operation).
5.2.2 Have the individual to be tested fill in Section 1 of Form 1717-1 an don a test respirator.
5.2.3 Instruction of the proper use of respiratory equipment may be given at this time if required.
5.2.4 Have subject, wearing the respirator, to be tested enter the test booth and connect the mask sampling hose to the downstream sampling line.
S.2.5 Re-check photometer zero and 100% setting (steps 5.1.10 through
- 5. i.12 of Start-up procedure).
NOTE:
Due to loss of a small amount of DOP from the booth atmosphere when the individual enters the booth, a small period of time may be required to allow the booth atmosphere to s tabilize.
5.2.6 Turn recorder on and set the reccrder rate at 2.5 cm/ min.
5.2.7
. Select CLEAR on the SAMPLE / CLEAR switch and select 100% o RANGE swi tch.
5.2.8 Check recorder for zero indication (adjust as necessary.
Set recorder ink marker on the zero line.)
I 5.2.9 Select SAMPLE on the SAMPLE / CLEAR switch and select SAMPLE-t UPSTREAM on the SAMPLE SELECTOR switch (chart recorder sht uld indicate 100% which is equal to the 10 mark on the chart paper when 100% is selected on the RANGE switch).
5.2.10 Mark chart paper with the following information:
100% RANGE, UPSTREAM, DATE.
5.2.11 Select DOWNSTREAM on the SAMPLE SELECTOR switch.

~
Revision 1 10/10/78 5.2.12 Place the RANGE switch to the lowest readable scale (Normally
.1% or 1% range).
5.2.13 Mark the chart pt per with a line to indicate the start of a test and have the individual begin.
Put a roman numeral above the start mark to indicate the test being monitored.
Test I is reciting the alphabet; Test II requires the individual to turn the head from side to side and up and down and Test III is running in place.
5.2.14 Allow the test to continue for a 1" space on the recording paper. At the end of the test run time signal the individual on the test booth to stop and put a ma'rk on the chart paper to indicate the end point of the test.
5.2.15 Allow a short rest period and then continue testing as in step 5.2.11 until all three tests are complete.
Mark the space between tests on the recording paper as " rest".
5.2.16 Af ter comnletion of test, select 100% on the RANGE switch.
5.2.17 Select UPSTREAM on the SAMPLE SELECTOR switch, 5.2.18 t
Mark chart paper with the following information:
100% Range.
Upstream and Date.
5.2.19 Secure the chart recorder.
5.2.20 l
Have subject disconnect aask sampling hose from the Downstream Sampling Line and exit the test chamber.
5.2.21 Place the name and social security number of the individual tested to the left of the test data on the recorder Sheet Place any comments or complaints stated by the individual being tested on Form 1717-1 Section 2 under remarks.
