1617 Revision 3 06/28/77 STATION HEALTH FHYSICS PROCEDURE 1617 RECEIDT OF RADICACTIVE MATERIAL 1.0 PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to describe requirements for receipt and acceptance of radioactive material.
2.0 DISCUSSION Several types of Radioactive Material could be received at Three Mile Island e.g., sources, contaminated liquids, contaminated tools and equipment.
The radiation protection personnel must insure that the shipment received has complied with Department of Transportation (DOT), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (N.R.C.) and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (Penn. DOT) regulations.

4.5 Survey Forms 5.0 OPERAT!NG INSTRUCTIONS 5.1 Receipt of General Shipments (All radioactive shipments except new fuel).
NOTE:
10 CFR 20 requires that packages of radioactive material delivered by a carrier to a licensed facility, or picked up at a carrier's terminal must be surveyed within three (3) hours.
5.1.1 The Radiation Protection Supervisor / Foreman and or Rad / Chem Tech /Jr. shall be notified immediately by the Met-Ed Storekeeper upon arrival of a shipment of radioactive material and its present location on site.
5.1.2 The Rad / Chem Tech /Jr. will proceed to the shipment location, and survey the vehicle, if possible, for radiation levels as follows:
5.1.2.1 Contact with external sur# ace of vehicle.
5.1.2.2 Three (3) feet from vehicle.
5.1.2.3 Six (6) feet from vehicle.
5.1.3 Record information on Vehicle Survey Record, Form HPP 1618-1.
-t 5.1.4 A Rad,ation Survey on the package will be taken~as follows:
5.1.4.1 Contact with external surface of package.

5.1. 5 A contamination Jurvey (swipe) of the package will be performed.
NOTE:
Steps 5.1.4.1 through 5.1.5 should be performed prior to unloading the package from the trans-porting vehicle.
5.1.6 Count the smear samples in accordance with HPP 1609 and record the results on HPP 1609-1.
5.1.7 If removable (loose) surface contamination in excess of 22,000 DPM/100 cm2 on the the package surface is found, the Rad / Chem Tech /Jr. shall immediately notify the Radiation Protection Supervisor / Foreman.
5.1.7.1 The Radiation Protection Supervisor / Foreman shall immediately notify 'the final delivering carrier and instruct the Rad / Chem. Tech /Jr. to survey the vehicle interior.
5.1.7.2 The Radiation Protection Supervisor / Foreman shall imediately inform station management for the purposes of notifying the Region I Office of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
5.1.8 If radiation levels are found on the external surface of the package in excess of 200 mrem per hour (mrem /hr) or at three feet from the external surface of the package in excess of 10 mrem /hr., the Rad Ctem Tech /Jr. shall immediately notify the Radiation Protection Supervisor / Foreman.
